Are Since and Because Interchangeable?

Since と Because は同じ意味ですか？

since: from a past time until now; after a time in the past; before the present time
because: for the reason that

上の定義では since は時間だけに関係しているようですが、実際には because と同じように原因を表すのに使われることがあります。

Since he ate cookies, Charlie is a happy boy.
Because he ate cookies, Charlie is a happy boy.

In the sentences, since and because both are help us show the cause of Charlie’s happy: eating cookies.

しかし、sinceとbecauseを同じように使うと、sinceが時間を指しているのか原因を指しているのかがはっきりしない場合に問題が生じます。

Notice this sentence:

Since he slayed the dragon, Charlie got measles.

In this sentence, Charlie got measles as a direct result of (caused by) killing the dragon or he simply contained measles after the period of time dragon (not caused by the killing), is unclear.

上の文でbecauseを使えば、ドラゴン退治が直接彼のはしかを引き起こしたことがわかるでしょう。 sinceと書かれているため、因果関係が不明です。

混乱を避けるために、sinceは時間の要素に限定し、becauseと使い分けをしないほうがよいでしょう。 なぜなら、何かが起こった理由を直接示すには、because が最適だからです。
